The I CAN Early Intervention Programme targets learners identified by participating schools as having experimented with alcohol, tobacco, or other substances. These learners engage in a structured, modular programme consisting of 10 behaviour change sessions. Progress and impact are tracked through pre- and post-assessments. Each participant receives a booklet containing in-session activities and @Home tasks to reinforce learning between sessions.
As part of the Together We Can component, learners also attend two individual sessions with a social worker to deepen personal reflection and support. Upon successful completion of both interventions, participants are awarded certificates in recognition of their commitment to living a substance-free life.
The We Can intervention is designed for parents and caregivers and includes two structured workshops. The first session equips them with knowledge about substance use and misuse, and provides guidance on how to engage in meaningful conversations with their children about these issues. The second workshop focuses on how to effectively support a child who may be experimenting with or struggling with substance use.
The We Educate workshop equips teachers with a solid understanding of substance use and misuse, emphasizing the use of evidence-based information. It also guides educators on how to integrate substance use prevention strategies into their classroom curriculum. The second part of the workshop focuses on identifying when a learner may need support and how to appropriately refer them for treatment related to substance use disorders (SUD).
The We Care Mass Prevention Day unites community stakeholders, schools, and learners in a shared prevention-focused event. It creates a dynamic platform for raising awareness and promoting substance use prevention through inclusive dialogue and collaboration. SANCA leads an engaging and interactive session titled “You Can Do It!”, which highlights key risk and protective factors related to substance use.
Local stakeholders are invited to deliver brief talks and showcase their services, fostering community involvement. Learners from the I CAN Programme share personal testimonials, while parents who participated in the We Can workshops reflect on their learning and growth. The event culminates in a collective pledge, where learners, educators, and community members commit to maintaining a drug-free school environment.
